Former concentration camp, Chão Bom, outside central Tarrafal

Tarrafal Resistance Museum

The museum occupies the former Portuguese prison camp and interprets two periods of political incarceration: antifascist prisoners and later anticolonial prisoners. Move through the site with attention to individual histories as well as the camp’s organization. This is a place of memory; give the interpretation time and follow local guidance on photography.

Tarrafal bay, Santiago

Tarrafal Beach

The beach is a natural pause after the town’s more demanding historical visit. Walk part of the bay and take time to notice the relationship between the sand, boats and nearby settlement. Choose any water activity according to current local advice; this stop can be enjoyed from shore without assuming a particular swimming condition or organized excursion.

Santiago highlands south of Tarrafal; regional road outing

Serra Malagueta Natural Park

Arrange a short guided walk or viewpoint visit in the mountain park, with the route chosen for conditions and your fitness. The highland setting offers a contrast with Tarrafal’s bay and an introduction to Santiago’s endemic vegetation. A two-hour editorial allowance is for a selected accessible section, with longer routes requiring a different day plan.

A note before you go. Visit the former camp at Chão Bom in its own quiet block, with a separate beach visit afterward or another day. Serra Malagueta is an inland road excursion: arrange a guide, a suitable short route and return pickup before leaving Tarrafal. The two-hour park allowance does not represent a complete mountain trek. All durations are editorial estimates, with transfers and meals additional.
