Puerto Varas lakefront
The waterfront is the place to understand Puerto Varas before heading farther into the Lake District. The town lies on the southwestern shore, with the volcanic landscape providing the wider setting. Make a relaxed lakefront walk your first stop; visibility changes with the weather, so mountain views should be a bonus rather than a fixed appointment.

The falls belong to Vicente Pérez Rosales National Park, well outside the town. This is a road excursion into the Lake District, not an extra stop on a waterfront walk. Build the day around the park and allow for the return journey; trying to add a cross-Andes boat trip would create a very different itinerary.

The hilltop church gives Puerto Varas a recognizable landmark and a connection with its German-settler heritage. Approach it as a working place of worship, not simply a viewpoint. The climb adds a different perspective to the lakefront, so combine the two only if slopes and steps fit your day.
