THE SHORTLIST

A few places worth your time.

01Outdoors · DAY 1 IDEA

Puntarenas

Mangrove Forest

in the estuary above the north side of the peninsula. Crocodiles, herons, and red snappers can be found in and around the mangrove forest that grows here. The forest can be seen from any pier on the north side of the city, and some fishermen with small boats on these piers may be able to take you for a small tour if asked and offered compensation.

Southern waterfront

Paseo de los Turistas

The seafront promenade is the clearest starting point for an unhurried look at this port city. Shops, food stalls and places to pause give the walk its rhythm. Keep the visit on the public promenade; the cruise pier is a separate facility and should not be assumed accessible simply because a ship is absent.

03Outdoors · DAY 2 IDEA

Western end of the Puntarenas peninsula

Peninsula-tip seafront park

The public space at the end of the peninsula offers benches, a playground and views from the sea-wall walkways. It is a simple outdoor pause rather than an excursion requiring a full day. Combine it with the southern waterfront, leaving the estuary side for a different look at the city.

A note before you go. Start with Mangrove Forest, then decide whether Paseo de los Turistas deserves a separate visit rather than rushing both. The suggested days are an editable grouping, not a timed tour. Visit allowances exclude transfers, meals and queues; confirm the exact entrance and current visiting arrangements for Peninsula-tip seafront park before setting off.

BEFORE YOU SET OFF

A more practical kind of plan.

Getting your bearings

Local buses leave from downtown and are relatively inexpensive. For travel to places outside of Puntarenas (e.g., Jacó, Manuel Antonio) there's a main bus station. Buses are usually on time and sometimes even leave early, so plan accordingly. Don't be surprised to see vendors on buses selling snacks and drinks. Most locals ride bikes or walk. You can rent bikes from any of the bike shops at really good rates. Just make sure you keep your bike locked. Helmets may be hard to find though, so you might want to consider bringing your own.

Build a route that makes sense

Keep Mangrove Forest as the anchor for one day and Peninsula-tip seafront park for the other. Check their exact entrances on the map before adding further stops; a town name alone is not a reliable meeting point.
