THE SHORTLIST

A few places worth your time.

Helsinki

Three Smiths Statue

A classic statue designed by the Finnish sculptor Felix Nylund, depicting three nude men hammering down on an anvil (except a study revealed that if the smiths were to actually hammer, they would hit each other on the head). A survey made by a Finnish newspaper resulted in this statue being the point most people think is the de facto centre point of the city of Helsinki.

Helsinki

Esplanadi Park

Located between the market square (Kauppatori) and the two Esplanadi boulevards, this small but stately park has a commanding position at the heart of the city. In the summer time it is full of people sitting on the lawn, meeting their friends and quite often also having a drink or two. In the summer there are often free concerts given by local artists on the stage close to Kauppatori, facing restaurant Kappeli. If you're walking around with an ice cream or sandwich, do watch out for the aggressive birds.

Helsinki

Korkeasaari

Helsinki's zoo, with approximately 150 different animal species. The zoos signature animals are the bears, the free-roaming peafowls and the cats (from tigers and lions to European wildcats). Another highlight is Amazonia, a partly underground house featuring tropical plants and smaller animals such as fish and frogs. Opened in 1889, Korkeasaari is reportedly one of the world's oldest operating zoos. Korkeasaari is connected to the mainland by bridges via Kulosaari and Mustikkamaa islands, and since spring 2016 pedestrians and bikers can take a shortcut from Kalasatama; the Isoisänsilta (lit. Grandfather bridge).

A note before you go. Start with Three Smiths Statue, then decide whether Esplanadi Park deserves a separate visit rather than rushing both. The suggested days are an editable grouping, not a timed tour. Visit allowances exclude transfers, meals and queues; confirm the exact entrance and current visiting arrangements for Baltic Herring Market before setting off.

BEFORE YOU SET OFF

A more practical kind of plan.

Getting your bearings

All public transport within the Capital Region is coordinated by HSL. This means that all public transport, such as trains, trams, buses, ferries and the metro all use the same ticketing scheme. You only need to know which zones you will travel through (see below). There are card readers (for dedicated cards and for NFC payment) inside buses, trams and regional trains, and before the platform areas for metro and the Suomenlinna ferry. The Helsinki metropolitan area is divided into 5 HSL zones from A to E. Zone A – Central Helsinki and as far as the tram goes.

Build a route that makes sense

Three Smiths Statue and Esplanadi Park are about 0.4 km apart in a straight line. Use the route link to compare the actual streets or transport connections before putting both in the same morning; the measurement is not a walking distance or a transfer estimate.
