A note before you go. Treat Alaverdi Cathedral as a separate regional outing from Telavi. Arrange the outward and return journey before adding another visit on that day. The suggested days are an editable grouping, not a timed tour. Visit allowances exclude transfers, meals and queues; confirm the exact entrance and current visiting arrangements for Alaverdi Cathedral before setting off.

BEFORE YOU SET OFF

A more practical kind of plan.

Getting your bearings

The city is small enough to be walkable. However, visiting the neighboring sites requires the use of further marshrutkas and/or taxis. Whereas seeing one or two sites (e.g., the fortress/palace and nearby Alaverdi Monastery) can be a one-day activity from Tbilisi, it is best to stay several days in Telavi to fully enjoy the surroundings (including Tusheti and Sighnaghi).

Build a route that makes sense

Palace of King Erekle II and 900-year-old Plane tree are about 0.2 km apart in a straight line. Use the route link to compare the actual streets or transport connections before putting both in the same morning; the measurement is not a walking distance or a transfer estimate.
