THE SHORTLIST

A few places worth your time.

01Culture · DAY 1 IDEA

Parados Kondylaki, 730 11, Hania, Crete, Hellas (GR)

Etz Hayyim Synagogue

Until 1999 Etz Hayyim was a house of prayer that remained the sole Jewish monument on Crete after the destruction of Crete's Jewish community in 1944. Essentially it stood as a monument to the success of the Nazis in obliterating 2,300 years of Jewish life on Crete. Between 1996 and the year of its rededication in 1999, the structure was painstakingly restored. The philosophy that directed this work is summed up in the Hebrew Am Israel Hayy: 'The people of Israel live'.

Old town waterfront

Old Venetian Harbour

The harbour and the lanes behind it reveal the overlapping Venetian and Ottoman layers that shape Chania. Walk a short stretch of waterfront, then turn into the old town instead of staying beside the restaurants throughout. The harbour is a good orientation point, but archaeological museums and beach trips require their own route decisions.

Maleme village

See the German cemetery on Kaukales hill at Maleme, the historical airport battlefield, the beach of Gerani where the sea turtle Caretta caretta is preserved.

A note before you go. Start with Etz Hayyim Synagogue, then decide whether Old Venetian Harbour deserves a separate visit rather than rushing both. The suggested days are an editable grouping, not a timed tour. Visit allowances exclude transfers, meals and queues; confirm the exact entrance and current visiting arrangements for Maleme village before setting off.

BEFORE YOU SET OFF

A more practical kind of plan.

Getting your bearings

A car is not recommended for getting around town. There are no cars permitted at all in much of the old town. If you are on Crete to see the 'real Crete', as opposed to the night clubs, then visiting the villages of the island is a must. All Cretan culture can be seen, heard and tasted in the villages. All villages have a central kafenion (coffee shop) which is where all people eventually end up.

Build a route that makes sense

Keep Etz Hayyim Synagogue as the anchor for one day and Maleme village for the other. Check their exact entrances on the map before adding further stops; a town name alone is not a reliable meeting point.
