BEFORE YOU SET OFF

A more practical kind of plan.

Getting your bearings

Buses run to and from the center and all of the microdistricts. Routes are marked at some bus stations and locals know where most of them go. "Marshrutkas" are mini-buses that run largely the same routes as the buses. If you plan on walking remember that the districs are broken into "microryons" which look like city blocks on the map but are often four times the size.

Build a route that makes sense

Shymkent hillfort Shym-Qala and Private Carpet Museum are about 1.6 km apart in a straight line. Use the route link to compare the actual streets or transport connections before putting both in the same morning; the measurement is not a walking distance or a transfer estimate.
