THE SHORTLIST

A few places worth your time.

01Outdoors · DAY 1 IDEA

Puno

Uros Floating Islands

Tour boats leave every 40 min from the dock (S/5 by taxi). The boat takes you to a couple of different islands (there are more than 50) where the island’s “president” explains how the islands are built. Everything is made of reeds, including the islands themselves, and some of the houses and boats. Notoriously commercialized (including hidden fees), but also a genuine wonder, and you can sidestep some of the schlock by independently booking overnight lodging in the islands.

Near the main square

Dreyer Museum

Near the main square, this museum gives Puno a cultural stop that does not require a boat journey. It is a useful choice for a day when you want to remain in town. Plan it separately from the Uros islands or the more distant archaeological sites, and confirm the current entrance and visiting arrangements locally.

Regional outing · 20 km from Puno (straight line)

Cutimbo

A tiny settlement some 30 km from Puno, in the Peruvian Altiplano, mostly visited on a short daytrip. Although the ruins at Sillustani are greater in most aspects, they also get loads of visitors. You can walk up the hill (about 30 minutes) for the ruins and amazing views of the surroundings and stop by the rather modest cave paintings on your way up.

A note before you go. Treat Cutimbo as a separate regional outing from Puno. Arrange the outward and return journey before adding another visit on that day. The suggested days are an editable grouping, not a timed tour. Visit allowances exclude transfers, meals and queues; confirm the exact entrance and current visiting arrangements for Cutimbo before setting off.

BEFORE YOU SET OFF

A more practical kind of plan.

Getting your bearings

Many of the hostels are set on a hill above the Plaza del Armas which feels even steeper because of the altitude. Taxis or motor-rickshaws will not charge you more than S/3 (taxi) or S/2 (moto) for a ride within the city. Urban colectivos charge S/0.50.

Build a route that makes sense

Keep Uros Floating Islands as the anchor for one day and Cutimbo for the other. Check their exact entrances on the map before adding further stops; a town name alone is not a reliable meeting point.
