THE SHORTLIST

A few places worth your time.

ul. Ratuszowa 1/3

Warsaw Zoo

A relatively small zoo, but with some interesting species, including a pack of wild and rambunctious monkeys that seem to fascinate every visitor. Other Zoo residents include lemurs, giraffes, elephants, hyraxes, lions, tigers, zebras, and jaguars that live in a glass enclosure that allows you stand only centimeters away from the beasts.

Skaryszewski Park

This park isn't as well known as some of the others, most likely since a palace is absent from it, but that said, it's nonetheless a pleasant park for a stroll or to read a book and comes complete with its own lake. Near park's main entrance, there is a memorial to the September 11th terror attacks.

Warsaw

Saska Kępa

A mostly residential neighborhood that is freckled with numerous embassies, but is unique for the cozy cafes and restaurants that line one its most well-known streets, ul. Francuska. In the evening, the neighborhood is an idyllic setting for a stroll, which can be topped off by watching the sunset over the Eastern skyline of Warsaw, dominated by the Palace of Culture and Science, while grilling or drinking by a couple of the city-provided grills on the banks of the Vistula. If you go to grill, be sure to bring some bug spray.

Królikarnia

The Królikarnia park is named after a pretence to being a rabbit warren for the King Augustus II in the 18th century, but in reality it served as a leisure residence and a place for meetings of the arts community. Those took place in the classicist palace, modelled after the renaissance Villa Rotonda outside Vicenza by the royal architect Domenico Merlini. The palace is situated right on the slope of the Warsaw escarpment, providing idyllic views of the greenery (and by now - low-rise residential areas) towards the Vistula river.

Wilanów Palace

Wilanów Palace is tucked away in the romantic surroundings of the royal gardens. It's an ideal place to take a date or just to relax, but be forewarned that there are a few ponds and lakes along the walking paths that are infested with mosquitoes, so be wise and protect yourself or your date with bug repellent. The interior of the palace has been converted into an art museum.

A note before you go. Start with Warsaw Zoo, then decide whether Skaryszewski Park deserves a separate visit rather than rushing both. The suggested days are an editable grouping, not a timed tour. Visit allowances exclude transfers, meals and queues; confirm the exact entrance and current visiting arrangements for Wilanów Palace before setting off.

BEFORE YOU SET OFF

A more practical kind of plan.

Getting your bearings

These must be validated on board. Jakdojade can help you plan the most convenient trip with the public transit between two points in the city. Google Maps can also do that, however they update bus schedules less often. There is also Easyway journey planner. Warszawa Śródmieście is beneath Warsaw Centralna station: the only buildings at street level are lobbies for the escalators and lifts.

Build a route that makes sense

Warsaw Zoo and Skaryszewski Park are about 2.9 km apart in a straight line. Use the route link to compare the actual streets or transport connections before putting both in the same morning; the measurement is not a walking distance or a transfer estimate.
