THE SHORTLIST

A few places worth your time.

01Culture · DAY 1 IDEA

Eixample

Sagrada Família

Gaudí's basilica is worth approaching as a whole building, from the different façades to the interior's treatment of light. Read a little about the architecture before entering so details have a context. Use official visitor information to confirm the ticket type and route that suit your interests.

La Salut / Carmel hillside

Park Güell

Park Güell shows a more outdoor side of Gaudí's work, where paths, planting and architecture are part of the same experience. Give yourself time to look beyond the most photographed mosaic details. Check the correct entrance for your reservation and allow for the hillside approach.

Passeig de Gràcia

Casa Batlló

Casa Batlló gives the Gaudí story a domestic scale after the basilica and park. Pay attention to the building's curves, color and handling of light instead of treating the façade as the entire experience. Decide whether an interior visit fits your interests and budget before reserving.

Ciutat Vella

Gothic Quarter

The Gothic Quarter is a change of pace from the Eixample: narrower streets, enclosed squares and layers of the older city. Set a few waypoints, such as Plaça del Rei, but let the walk stay flexible. Remember that these are residential streets as well as visitor routes.

A note before you go. Check timed admission before setting a day order. Park Güell involves hills, so plan transport and footwear around the approach rather than assuming a flat city stroll.
