THE SHORTLIST

A few places worth your time.

Trincomalee

Fort Fredrick

Fort Fredrick is an old Dutch fort dating back to 1665 located on a peninsula North East of the town center. It has a long and storied history and was the site of battles involving (at different times) the Portuguese, Dutch, French and English navies. It is still actively garrisoned, but is open to visitors and is a great place to explore, especially for history buffs. There is a nice Hindu temple atop the cliff at the end of the peninsula with spectacular views.

Salli Muthumariamman Kovil

This is a beautiful Hindu kovil that provides a good view of Trincomalee town, and of the fishing boats in front of it. It is an important temple to the local Hindus, who regularly visit it for prayers and festivals. During festivals, it is common to see drummers, dancers, men with pierced tongues and women holding pots of milk.

Nilaveli Rd

Commonwealth War Cemetery

The final resting place of over 600 Allied soldiers and sailors who died in Trincomalee during World War II. You will be asked for a donation upon entering. The best time to visit is at sunset when the light shines directly on the gravestones.

Marble Beach

15 km south of Trincomalee. It is part of a Navy base so there is a small entry fee. The beach is divided into public and private areas. The public side is free but lacks facilities. The private side has chaises longues and shade but you need to buy something. A very beautiful beach and a hidden gem.

Koneswaram Temple

This is a prominent Hindu temple known for its vivid colours and coastal location. The first temple was built before 400 CE. It was destroyed and later rebuilt in the 20th century. The temple offers a good introduction to Hindu traditions. From its clifftop position on Swami Rock, you'll get impressive ocean views. Nearby, you can visit Ravana’s Cleft, said to have formed when the Hindu god Shiva made King Ravana drop his sword.

A note before you go. Start with Fort Fredrick, then decide whether Salli Muthumariamman Kovil deserves a separate visit rather than rushing both. The suggested days are an editable grouping, not a timed tour. Visit allowances exclude transfers, meals and queues; confirm the exact entrance and current visiting arrangements for Koneswaram Temple before setting off.

BEFORE YOU SET OFF

A more practical kind of plan.

Getting your bearings

Trincomalee itself is a very compact town, so you can get around on foot. For longer trips, for example to Uppuveli, rickshaws are available at nearly every corner. Several places in Uppuveli rent bicycles for around Rs 1000 per day which is a nice way to explore.

Build a route that makes sense

Fort Fredrick and Salli Muthumariamman Kovil are about 4.3 km apart in a straight line. Use the route link to compare the actual streets or transport connections before putting both in the same morning; the measurement is not a walking distance or a transfer estimate.
