THE SHORTLIST

A few places worth your time.

01Culture · DAY 1 IDEA

Treasure Cay area, south of Cooper’s Town

Carleton Point

At the northeastern peninsula of the Treasure Cay Beach area, this site marks a Loyalist settlement founded in 1783 and later abandoned after a hurricane. Look for the commemorative interpretation and consider why newcomers chose this coastal position. Confirm current access locally; do not expect a reconstructed town or a large visitor museum.

North Abaco, regional road outing south of Cooper’s Town

Treasure Cay Beach

The long curve of Treasure Cay Beach is the reason to make this coastal detour. Plan a walk that leaves enough time to return at an unhurried pace, watching how the shoreline changes with the water. Resort services and beach access arrangements should be checked separately rather than assumed from the appearance of the sand.

New Plymouth, Green Turtle Cay; separate boat excursion

Albert Lowe Museum

A restored Loyalist house in New Plymouth holds paintings, photographs, documents and objects connected with Bahamian history. Alton Lowe established the museum and named it for his father, a model ship maker. Take time to connect the collection with the settlement outside, remembering that the museum is on Green Turtle Cay, not in Cooper’s Town.

A note before you go. Group Carleton Point with Treasure Cay Beach as a road excursion south of Cooper’s Town. Give Green Turtle Cay a separate day: the tourism board confirms boat or ferry access, and the Albert Lowe Museum is in New Plymouth on that cay. Arrange onward and return transport before departure and confirm museum access. Durations are editorial allowances on site, excluding all connections.
