Taste a small selection of chocolate products and ask how cacao grown in southern Belize reaches the San Pedro production facility. The company also uses parts of the bean for products such as cacao tea. Boat excursion south of San Pedro, Ambergris Caye
Join an authorized guided outing to the reserve’s reef channel and surrounding habitats. Hol Chan protects linked reef, seagrass and mangrove environments, so ask the guide to explain more than the largest animals encountered. Follow the briefing and keep clear of coral; sightings depend on conditions and should not determine whether the visit feels worthwhile.

Treat this as an outing to a developed beach area rather than a search for an undiscovered shore. Choose where to settle after checking the arrangements of individual businesses, then allow time to enjoy the sand and water views. Rentals, food service and seating are separate decisions, and the return journey deserves planning before the visit begins.

A note before you go. The Fisheries Department places Hol Chan about four miles south of San Pedro, so reserve an organized boat outing and confirm the actual sites, equipment and boarding point. The chocolate shop is downtown on Front Street, while Secret Beach is a separate island journey. Arrange the return ride before setting out there. Durations are editorial visit blocks and exclude boat travel and road transfers.
