THE SHORTLIST

A few places worth your time.

01Outdoors · DAY 1 IDEA

Huangpu riverfront

The Bund

Walk a section of the riverfront rather than staying at the first busy viewpoint. Compare the historic buildings behind you with Pudong across the water; that contrast explains much of the appeal. Leave extra space in your plan for crowded promenades and use crossings rather than stepping into traffic.

Old City

Yu Garden

The classical garden and the surrounding commercial district offer different kinds of visits, so decide which matters most to you. Go beyond the shopfronts if garden architecture is the goal. Check the correct entrance and ticket arrangements, then allow time to explore without treating every narrow passage as a photo queue.

People’s Square

Shanghai Museum, People’s Square

Make this an opportunity to look carefully at a few areas of Chinese art and material culture. The museum's wider collections span many forms, but exhibitions vary between its sites. Confirm the branch and displays you want before visiting rather than assuming all celebrated objects remain in this building.

Huangpu

Sinan Road

The historic houses and quieter streets offer a useful change from the waterfront's grand scale. Follow the public pavements, notice the architectural details and pause for a drink if somewhere appeals. Many buildings have specific uses or controlled access, so enjoy their setting without treating private entrances as attractions.

A note before you go. Check which Shanghai Museum branch holds the exhibitions you want, since the city has multiple museum sites. Treat the garden itself and the surrounding Yu Garden shopping district as different experiences.
