THE SHORTLIST

A few places worth your time.

01Culture · DAY 1 IDEA

Above the Chavón River, Casa de Campo area

Altos de Chavón

Walk the stone plazas with an understanding that this Mediterranean-style village was created in the twentieth century. The church, amphitheatre and archaeological museum give the complex several possible focuses. Choose time for interpretation as well as the river outlook, and check separately which interiors or performances are included in your entry arrangements.

02Culture · DAY 1 IDEA

Between La Romana and San Pedro de Macorís; regional road outing

Cueva de las Maravillas

Take the guided route through the permitted part of the cave to see its formations and Taíno paintings. The value lies in their shared setting, so keep the guide’s explanation central to the visit. Follow the photography prohibition and avoid touching surfaces; this is a managed heritage environment rather than an independent cave-exploration trip.

Boat excursion off La Romana’s coast

Isla Catalina

Reserve an island outing that identifies the landing beach and any guided marine activities clearly. Catalina provides a different setting from the city’s river and cave excursions, with time for the shore even if you choose not to snorkel. The two-hour allowance is only an island visit block; the complete boat excursion will require longer.

A note before you go. Confirm non-guest admission for Altos de Chavón before entering the Casa de Campo area. The municipality describes Cueva de las Maravillas as a guided visit and prohibits photography to protect the cave art; our allowance includes arrival and orientation. Catalina requires a separate boat excursion from La Romana, with landing and return confirmed in advance. Durations are editorial on-site blocks, excluding transfers.
