Separate church linked to the wider Lalibela complex by trenches
The cross-shaped form of Biete Ghiorgis is striking from above, but a visit gains depth by following the permitted approach into its rock-cut setting. Pause at different levels to understand the relationship between church, trench and surrounding ground. Allow the guide to establish appropriate access, and keep time for the building's continuing religious purpose alongside its architectural achievement.

Agree a route through the rock-cut passages that fits your pace and the religious activity taking place.
