Akureyri
Gásir is the site of a medieval trading post, located 11 km north of Akureyri. In July, locals stage medieval reenactments here. At other times of year, it is a sparse area. It is also a reasonably good place to view the Northern Lights if you do not want to drive a long distance from town. You can pull into a parking area after dark.

Akureyri
The municipal botanical garden is a quieter way to spend time in Akureyri than building every day around an organized excursion. Give the paths room in the itinerary and notice the planting as well as the fjord-town setting. Seasonal daylight and weather will shape the visit, so pair it flexibly with an indoor museum.

A note before you go. Start with Hof, then decide whether Icelandic Aviation Museum deserves a separate visit rather than rushing both. The suggested days are an editable grouping, not a timed tour. Visit allowances exclude transfers, meals and queues; confirm the exact entrance and current visiting arrangements for Lystigarðurinn Botanical Garden before setting off.

BEFORE YOU SET OFF
Being Iceland's northern capital doesn't mean Akureyri is a huge metropolis. Although it can get a bit hilly leaving the waterline, walking distances are reasonable for a fit person. Akureyri has a public bus system, called SVA, which is free for all. They all start and end at the main town centre stop (Miðbær). But when they're free, why complain? For easier routing and route-planning consider using Strætó bs.. Paid parking zone are enforced in the downtown area. For those who prefer to cycle, it's possible to rent a bicycle at the souvenir shop The Viking in Hafnarstræti ().
Hof and Icelandic Aviation Museum are about 3.6 km apart in a straight line. Use the route link to compare the actual streets or transport connections before putting both in the same morning; the measurement is not a walking distance or a transfer estimate.
