THE SHORTLIST

A few places worth your time.

01Outdoors · DAY 1 IDEA

Padangtegal

Sacred Monkey Forest Sanctuary

The forest combines trees, temple surroundings and a semi-wild macaque population. Come for the setting and observe the animals at a distance rather than seeking close contact. Read the sanctuary's instructions, secure loose belongings and food, and let staff manage any animal interactions or disruptions.

Central Ubud

Museum Puri Lukisan

Give Ubud's visual culture some attention beyond the souvenir shops. This central museum is a manageable place to slow down with Balinese art and notice differences in subject and style. Check the current displays, then choose a smaller number of works to study rather than racing through every room.

Campuhan

Campuhan Ridge Walk

The ridge provides a landscape break from Ubud's busy central streets. Walk an out-and-back distance that suits your energy rather than assuming the whole route is necessary. Bring water, choose comfortable footwear and turn back if rain makes conditions unsuitable; this is a walk, not a transport shortcut.

Sanggingan

Neka Art Museum

Neka's paintings and other collections give the second day an artistic focus after the ridge. Read the artwork labels and look for the differences between artists rather than expecting one uniform Balinese style. Allow a separate transfer to the museum and check current access before committing to the visit.

A note before you go. Plan transfers as well as visits, especially along busy roads. Keep food secured around macaques, follow sanctuary guidance and choose the cooler part of the day for the exposed ridge walk.
