THE SHORTLIST

A few places worth your time.

Milan

Piazza del Duomo

The grandest square in the city, the Piazza del Duomo is the cultural and social heart of Milan, and contains several of its most famous sights. There's the majestic cathedral and classy Galleria, plus the 18th C Palazzo Reale and several big, venerable buildings. The square is centred around the statue of King Victor Emmanuel II at Solferino – his horse is skidding to a halt as if it's just noticed the Austrian bayonets. The square is grandiloquent yet softened by its cafés, restaurants and shops, pigeons, and passers-by.

Piazza Duomo

Duomo

Massive, impressive and slightly mad: the cathedral is a late Gothic confection in white marble, festooned with spires and statues. You can admire the facade free from the piazza; getting inside or onto the roof involves three separate queues that may take over an hour, unless you book online. There's a tedious list of what is and isn't allowed. Despite this list, shorts which end just above the knee are indeed allowed. Short-shorts are prohibited. Small backpacks are allowed (there is a bag check station).

Inside La Scala

Scala Theater Museum

A museum dedicated to one of the world's most famous opera houses. All types of memorabilias like dresses and pictures are on display. This includes a view into the opera hall from one of the loges, which is a short and simple alternative to the official guided tour of the opera. (Note that third party tour operators of the opera are not showing anything other than this view from the museum.) Check the museum website for the practice schedule, which determines visibility of the opera hall.

Milan

Gardens of the Guastalla

Among Milan's oldest (founded in the 16th century), but quite small gardens, and are very close to the University district. The parks, however, were only opened to the public in the early 20th century. You can have a nice walk inside, and you also have a classical temple-like structure and also a sort of pond with a Baroque railing surrounding it. Reachable via Crocetta, P.ta Romana, Missori or even San Babila metro stations. It's also not that far from the Duomo.

Milan

Basilica di San Lorenzo Maggiore

A lovely 4th-century basilica, perhaps is one of the oldest basilicas in Western Europe. It is famous for its beautiful courtyard, with Roman-age columns and statue of the emperor Constantine. The Colonne di San Lorenzo (St. Lawrence's columns) are actually a remain of the Roman "Mediolanum", dating from the 3rd century AD. Further south the square you can see Medieval Porta Ticinese (there is also a homonymous newer gate which lies about 600 m south by Corso di Porta Ticinese).

A note before you go. Start with Piazza del Duomo, then decide whether Duomo deserves a separate visit rather than rushing both. The suggested days are an editable grouping, not a timed tour. Visit allowances exclude transfers, meals and queues; confirm the exact entrance and current visiting arrangements for Basilica di San Lorenzo Maggiore before setting off.

BEFORE YOU SET OFF

A more practical kind of plan.

Getting your bearings

Credit/debit cards can be used on the metro, buses and trams but cannot be used to travel on suburban trains (S-lines). You can tap it multiple times within the 90 minutes. Being above ground means you get a view of what you're passing, so if you don't need to go far, they're convenient and fun. Some tram lines are operated by the ultramodern 'jumbo' yellow tram, others are run by orange antique traditional carriages (older than many in museums in other cities) with wooden panelling inside and glass chandeliers.

Build a route that makes sense

Piazza del Duomo and Duomo are about 0.1 km apart in a straight line. Use the route link to compare the actual streets or transport connections before putting both in the same morning; the measurement is not a walking distance or a transfer estimate.
