THE SHORTLIST

A few places worth your time.

01Outdoors · DAY 1 IDEA

Regional excursion: Laikipia plains outside Nanyuki

Ol Pejeta Conservancy

Ol Pejeta combines wildlife conservation with community work across a substantial conservancy. Choose a defined introductory visit or talk rather than trying to cover every advertised experience within a short stop. Arrange entry and any specialist activity directly, then let the staff's interpretation explain the landscape and conservation priorities. A full safari needs more time than this initial allocation.

Mount Kenya Wildlife Conservancy, Mount Kenya Safari Club Road, outside central Nanyuki

Mount Kenya Animal Rescue and Rehabilitation Centre

The centre cares for injured, orphaned and distressed animals and offers guided visitor tours. Ask the guides about rehabilitation and the circumstances of the animals in their care, treating the visit as an introduction to that work. The centre is distinct from a drive through a wild reserve, with its own access arrangements and conservation programmes.

Nanyuki; confirm workshop directions with the collective

PCEA Nanyuki Spinners and Weavers

The women-led collective works through fibre preparation, spinning and weaving to produce textiles in Nanyuki. Arrange a workshop visit and follow a piece through the stages that are being demonstrated that day. Looking closely at pattern, texture and finishing helps make the encounter about skill and production as well as the possibility of buying a rug, throw or other textile.

A note before you go. Confirm Ol Pejeta's gate, vehicle requirements and the specific experience you want before leaving Nanyuki. The rescue centre has a separate address on Mount Kenya Safari Club Road; book its own visit rather than assuming an Ol Pejeta ticket includes it. Contact the weaving collective about workshop access. Durations are editorial estimates, with the Ol Pejeta allocation covering a brief introduction and all road travel additional.
