THE SHORTLIST

A few places worth your time.

01Neighborhoods · DAY 1 IDEA

Sigulda

Walking-stick Square

Opened in 2007. The walking stick is a symbol of Sigulda town. Locals have made walking sticks since the 19th century to help tourists walk up and down the primeval valley of the Gauja River.

Sigulda

Sigulda Medieval Castle Ruins

Next to the Sigulda New Castle. Built in 1207 by the Order of the Brethren of the Sword. In the ruins there's an open air stage. Two towers are restored (in one of them you can try wearing armour, and there is a locally-made candles shop at the top; from the top of the other one you can see impressive panorama) as are some corridors.

Krimulda Palace and Ruins

About 800 m further from Gütmanis Cave up the Serpentine road. The cable car takes tourists between Sigulda and Krimulda every half hour. This site leaves a breath of long gone times. The Krimulda Palace is about 400 m further southwest – see . The palace features an interesting rehabilitation centre and hostel.

Sigulda

Gütmanis/Gutman's Cave

Lies half-way between Sigulda and Turaida castle and has a little creek flowing from it. A legend states that the water in the creek emanates from Gutmanis' tears, and drinking it is supposed to be healthy and boosting one's lifespan. Try it at your own risk, or just watch people stopping by to fill entire bottles. Many inscriptions in the cave stem from German times, which you might be able to identify.

Adventure Park Mežakaķis is a sporty activity with walks in the trees, and more active time in open air.

A note before you go. Start with Walking-stick Square, then decide whether Sigulda Medieval Castle Ruins deserves a separate visit rather than rushing both. The suggested days are an editable grouping, not a timed tour. Visit allowances exclude transfers, meals and queues; confirm the exact entrance and current visiting arrangements for Amusement Park Wild Cat before setting off.

BEFORE YOU SET OFF

A more practical kind of plan.

Getting your bearings

Ask for the English language map at the tourist information (at the train station). It has this itinerary plotted and other short walks. There are also maps for much longer walking/cycling routes.

Build a route that makes sense

Walking-stick Square and Sigulda Medieval Castle Ruins are about 0.5 km apart in a straight line. Use the route link to compare the actual streets or transport connections before putting both in the same morning; the measurement is not a walking distance or a transfer estimate.
