THE SHORTLIST

A few places worth your time.

01Culture · DAY 1 IDEA

Falealupo area, northwest Savai‘i; road trip from Asau

Moso's Footprint

The lava crack associated with the giant Moso turns an otherwise modest geological feature into a place of storytelling. Approach it as a culturally significant site and ask its custodians how they explain the legend. It lies outside Asau toward Falealupo, so include driving and local introductions in your day rather than expecting a village walk.

02Culture · DAY 1 IDEA

Western Savai‘i; regional excursion from Asau

Cape Mulinuu

Continue toward the western cape for a landscape associated in Samoan tradition with the passage of spirits. Ask a local guide which areas can be visited and how to approach them respectfully. Enjoy the coastline from an appropriate vantage point; do not assume every cave, pool or archaeological feature mentioned in regional accounts has unrestricted access.

North-coast Savai‘i; separate drive from Asau

Peapea Cave, Savai‘i

This lava tube offers a different view of Savai‘i's volcanic terrain, with swiftlets using its dark interior. Arrange the required guide, lighting and a suitable short route before arrival, rather than equating the cave's full length with a recommended visitor walk. Follow instructions around the birds and the uneven floor, and leave formations undisturbed.

A note before you go. Arrange a vehicle from Asau and confirm access with local hosts before setting out toward Falealupo. Keep Peapea Cave as a separate north-coast excursion and arrange its guide in advance; its locked entrance is not an invitation to explore independently. Carry water, suitable footwear and cash for locally managed entry, and ask about Sunday arrangements.
