THE SHORTLIST

A few places worth your time.

01Neighborhoods · DAY 1 IDEA

Manono Island; road and boat excursion from Mulifanua

Manono Island coastal footpath

Follow the island's main coastal footpath at a pace that allows room for greetings and everyday village life. This is a lived landscape rather than a resort promenade: keep entrances clear, dress appropriately away from the water and ask before photographing residents. Arrange the boat return before beginning and let local advice determine how far to walk.

02Culture · DAY 1 IDEA

Lepuia‘i village, Manono Island

Grave of 99 Stones

With a local host, visit the stone grave at Lepuia‘i and hear the story associated with the chief Vaovasa. Its significance lies in the interpretation and setting as much as in the stones themselves. Ask where to stand and whether photography is appropriate, and avoid walking onto or rearranging any part of the site.

Manono Island summit; guided walk

Mt Tulimanuiva Star Mound

The star mound on Manono's high point adds an archaeological layer to the coastal village walk. Arrange a local guide who can establish the current route and explain the different interpretations of its purpose. Allow extra time for the ascent and wet ground, and keep to the permitted path without climbing across the earth-and-stone structure.

A note before you go. Arrange the outward and return boat at Manono-uta, which is separate from Mulifanua's Savai‘i ferry terminal. Ask your hosts about suitable visiting days, village permissions and a guide for the archaeological sites. Give this excursion a full day or stay overnight rather than booking it tightly against a ferry or flight. The walking allowances exclude road travel and the boat crossing.
