THE SHORTLIST

A few places worth your time.

01Culture · DAY 1 IDEA

K. Rzaev St

Karakalpak Museum of Arts

Do not miss the Karakalpakstan State Museum of Art's Igor Savitsky Collection with its unique collection of many thousands of works by dissenting artists from the Soviet Union during the period in which Stalinist socialist realism was the only permitted form of Soviet art. The documentary film The Desert of Forbidden Art is all about the collection and its history. Many believe this is the only compelling reason to visit Nukus. The Savitsky Collection is often said by locals to be the best museum in Uzbekistan.

Nukus

Karakalpak State Museum

The museum introduces the region through natural-history material, complementing the art collection associated with Savitsky. Keep the two institutions distinct when asking for directions or arranging transport. This is a practical way to give Nukus a full cultural day without assuming that the distant Aral Sea shore is a quick additional stop.

BEFORE YOU SET OFF

A more practical kind of plan.

Build a route that makes sense

Keep Karakalpak Museum of Arts as the anchor for one day and Amet and Ayimkhan Shamuratovs House Museum for the other. Check their exact entrances on the map before adding further stops; a town name alone is not a reliable meeting point.
