THE SHORTLIST

A few places worth your time.

01Culture · DAY 1 IDEA

Kokand

Khudoyar Khan Palace

The palace of the last ruler of Kokand is the natural starting point for the city’s monumental architecture. Slow down at the decorated entrance before considering the museum spaces. It helps to visit the palace before the other monuments, so you have a clearer sense of the khanate behind the city’s surviving buildings.

Kokand

Jami Mosque

The carved wooden columns and surrounding porch are the details to look for here. They give the mosque a different visual rhythm from the palace’s decorated façade. Treat it as a religious heritage site with its own visitor rules; the presence of a minaret does not automatically mean that climbing it is permitted.

Kokand

Dakhma-i-Shahan Mausoleum

This burial monument of the Kokand rulers adds a funerary setting to the palace and mosque itinerary. The official tourism board includes it among the city’s heritage sights. Keep the visit measured and respectful, and check the exact name when saving the pin, since transliterations vary across maps and guidebooks.

A note before you go. Give the palace the largest share of your cultural day, with the mosque as a contrasting stop rather than another palace-like building. Keep the mausoleum for a quieter second outing if you prefer not to visit three monuments at once. Confirm current visitor access at religious sites, and leave breaks between visits, especially when the sun makes exposed courtyards uncomfortable.
