Travel inland by road for a locally guided introduction to the valley's agricultural settlements and cultivated landscape. Ask which public paths or hosted visits are suitable, giving attention to the work involved in farming this terrain. Keep out of fields and private compounds without permission; this is a rural community outing, not an unrestricted trail through people's livelihoods.

Santo Antão uplands; separate road excursion from Porto Novo
Arrange a drive to the Cova area to appreciate the crater and the cultivated land within its volcanic form. Ask a local guide to choose a suitable viewpoint and short walk for the day's visibility and ground conditions. A full hike into the Paúl Valley requires a different plan, with its own fitness assessment, onward pickup and time allowance.

A note before you go. Ask locally about an appropriate church visit, then arrange separate drivers or guided road outings for Ribeira das Patas and Cova. Agree the stops, walking amount and return transport in advance, allowing for winding roads and changing mountain weather. Carry water, suitable shoes and a layer for the uplands. The Cova allowance covers a viewpoint visit and short agreed walk, excluding a full descent to Paúl.
