THE SHORTLIST

A few places worth your time.

01Outdoors · DAY 1 IDEA

Northern end of Fuvahmulah

Thoondu

Walk the upper beach to examine the small pale pebbles and the shape of this exposed northern shore. Seasonal sand movement can create temporary pools, but they should not be treated as a promised feature of every visit. The open-ocean setting is the main attraction; observe the wave action from a suitable distance.

Freshwater lake and wetlands inside Fuvahmulah

Dhadimagi Kilhi

The lake and its surrounding wetlands offer a different view of the Maldives from the familiar beach-and-lagoon image. Use the established boardwalk access for a slow look at water, plants and birds, with a local guide if available. Avoid treating the marsh as open ground: the protected setting is best explored through designated visitor routes.

Historic religious site in Fuvahmulah

Gemmiskiy and its communal well

Look at the relationship between the mosque, its enclosure and the rectangular communal well rather than focusing on a single facade. The local destination site identifies Gemmiskiy as one of the island’s oldest and most significant mosques. Ask for historical interpretation and visitor permission locally, and keep movement around the cemetery and religious spaces respectful.

A note before you go. Fuvahmulah has its own domestic airport according to Visit Maldives; arrange the onward island transfer with your host before arrival. Keep Thoondu as a shore-observation outing unless a qualified local operator advises otherwise, since the tourism board describes strong currents and no intervening lagoon. Ask about permitted access at Gemmiskiy. Durations are editorial allowances, excluding flights and local transfers.

Planning sources reviewed 2026-10-19. Suggested days and time allowances are editorial starting points. Check the linked visitor information for opening hours, access, and reservations.
