THE SHORTLIST

A few places worth your time.

01Culture · DAY 1 IDEA

Old City

Wat Phra Singh

The temple is a useful place to look closely at Lanna architecture and decoration before visiting the larger chedi nearby. Move slowly through the permitted areas instead of treating it as one stop on a rapid temple circuit. Follow local guidance on shoes, clothing and photographing sacred interiors.

Old City

Wat Chedi Luang

The large historic chedi gives this temple a very different presence from Wat Phra Singh. Spend time looking at its form and the surrounding grounds, rather than expecting a fully intact monument. Pair the two visits with a meal or rest so that each site retains its own character.

Doi Suthep mountain

Wat Phra That Doi Suthep

This mountain temple deserves a planned outing, with time for the journey as well as the grounds. The setting makes a strong contrast to the old-city temples. Confirm transport and access arrangements before setting off, and allow extra time if stairs or steep approaches will affect your visit.

Nimman

Nimmanhaemin Road

Nimman offers a contemporary counterpoint after the mountain temple, with places to browse, eat and take a proper break. Choose a few side streets instead of walking the main road simply to tick it off. Let this be the flexible part of the day if the Doi Suthep journey runs longer.

A note before you go. Keep the old-city temples on one day and arrange a return transport plan for Doi Suthep on the other. Bring temple-appropriate clothing and leave generous time for the mountain road.
