THE SHORTLIST

A few places worth your time.

01Culture · DAY 1 IDEA

Colosseo

Colosseum

The Colosseum rewards attention to its structure as much as its scale. Look at the different levels and imagine how people moved through such a large arena. Check exactly which areas a ticket covers, and avoid promising yourself another fixed-time visit too soon after admission.

Ancient Rome

Roman Forum and Palatine

These ruins become more meaningful when you follow a map and identify a few buildings rather than trying to name every surviving column. The Forum and Palatine form a substantial outdoor visit. Keep the pace gentle, and use official visitor information to choose a suitable entrance and route.

Piazza della Rotonda

Pantheon

Stand inside the Pantheon long enough for the proportions and light from the oculus to register. Its dome is the real reason to slow down here. Confirm current visitor arrangements, and be considerate of its continuing religious role rather than treating the interior as a busy passageway.

West bank of the Tiber

Trastevere

Across the Tiber, Trastevere is a good place to exchange monument hopping for a neighborhood walk. Pick a short route through the lanes, then leave room to choose a meal without haste. Step aside for residents and deliveries in the narrower streets, particularly around busy dining areas.

A note before you go. The ancient sites involve exposed ground and uneven surfaces. Bring water, allow a real rest, and check entry arrangements directly before choosing the order of visits.
