THE SHORTLIST

A few places worth your time.

01Culture · DAY 1 IDEA

Higashiyama

Kiyomizu-dera Temple

The broad wooden stage and westward city views are the main reason to make the climb. Allow enough time for the approach streets as well as the temple grounds. Wear shoes suited to slopes and keep the morning flexible instead of scheduling another distant temple immediately afterwards.

Gion

Yasaka-jinja Shrine

Yasaka anchors the Gion area with colourful shrine buildings and a long connection to Kyoto's festival traditions. It pairs naturally with an eastern-city walk after Kiyomizu-dera. Treat the surrounding streets as a lived-in district: follow photography restrictions and leave residents and working performers space.

Central Kyoto

Nijo-jo Castle

Choose the castle when you want to understand political power and architecture alongside Kyoto's temples. Gardens and palace spaces deserve an unhurried visit; the official guided tour is an option for more context. Check what your chosen ticket includes before building the rest of the day around it.

Central Kyoto

Nishiki Food Market

Nishiki is a good place to look closely at Kyoto ingredients, from vegetables and pickles to tofu products. Buy a few things you actually want to taste instead of treating every counter as a photo stop. Eat where the vendor permits, rather than while walking through the narrow market.

A note before you go. Keep the eastern stops together and use public transport for the central-city day. Check individual palace access at Nijo-jo; its grounds and palace interiors can have different arrangements.
