THE SHORTLIST

A few places worth your time.

01Culture · DAY 1 IDEA

Asakusa

Sensoji Temple

Walk through the temple approach rather than rushing straight to the main hall. The gates and Nakamise shopping street make the arrival part of the experience. Keep the central route clear for worshippers, then explore a side street when the approach feels crowded.

Ueno

Ueno Park

Ueno gives the eastern half of this plan a useful change of pace. Choose a park walk or make one museum your main visit; attempting both every museum and the surrounding streets will quickly fill the day. Travel here from Asakusa rather than assuming the two stops are adjacent.

Harajuku

Meiji Jingu

The wooded approach changes the mood before you reach the shrine buildings. Come for that transition as much as the architecture, and allow time to walk without a fixed photo checklist. Follow signs around worship areas and continue into Harajuku afterwards if you want a livelier contrast.

Shibuya

Shibuya Scramble Crossing

The crossing makes more sense as the entrance to a neighbourhood than as a standalone photograph. Watch a few signal changes from a safe spot, cross with the crowd, then follow the shopping streets that interest you. Keep luggage and photography out of the moving pedestrian flow.

A note before you go. Use trains between the eastern and western clusters. These are flexible half-day anchors; add museum visits only when they match your interests, rather than trying to collect every landmark.
