THE SHORTLIST

A few places worth your time.

01Culture · DAY 1 IDEA

Castelo

Castelo de São Jorge

The hilltop castle gives the jumble of Lisbon a readable shape: rooftops below, the Tagus beyond, and neighborhoods spreading over the slopes. Make this your orientation stop before exploring Alfama. Leave time for the views rather than treating the grounds as a quick photograph.

Alfama

Alfama

Alfama is best approached as a lived-in neighborhood rather than a checklist of pretty lanes. Follow the cobbled streets slowly and pause where the river comes into view. Expect slopes and steps; choose a short loop if mobility or the heat makes climbing uncomfortable.

Belém

Jerónimos Monastery

Set aside unhurried time for this monumental monastery instead of rushing through Belém between transport connections. Its architecture makes a rewarding contrast with the tight lanes of Alfama. Confirm which spaces your chosen admission includes, then build the rest of the day around that visit.

Belém waterfront

Belém Tower

The tower's riverside setting is part of its appeal, so approach it as a waterfront stop as well as a monument. Look at the stonework and the relationship between the building and the Tagus. Check access separately; an exterior visit still fits naturally into a Belém afternoon.

A note before you go. Start high and work downhill around Alfama where possible. Keep Belém on its own day, and check monument access before committing to timed reservations.
